9/9/2022 - Detroit Lake, Detroit Lake State Park, OR

Image
Time: 2.9 hours Distance: 7.55 miles We put into Detroit Lake at Detroit Lake State Park late in the morning on a sunny but windy day. We paddled Northeast under the bridge near Detroit, up French Creek the little until we were blocked, back down the Creek then around the point and up Breitenbush River as again until we were blocked. At that point we turned around and started back towards our put-in point. The winds had created swells of about a foot heading almost directly into us on the way out but on the way back the winds had picked up and in some places the swells were up to three feet and paddling became quite a challenge. Much of the time we were moving forward more by sailing that paddling and we were sometimes completely at the mercy of the waves as to which direction we were heading. The later parts of the trip back, where we encountered the largest swells, became pretty sketchy so we stayed as close to shore as possible but there were large sections that had been cordoned of

9/7/2022 - Lake Billy Chinook, The Cove Palisades State Park, OR

Image
Time: 3.4 hours Distance: 9.15 miles We put into Lake Billy Chinook from the Cove Palisades State Park outside of Culver OR on a calm pleasant morning. We were struck immediately by the complete lack of people at a place that use to be filled during the summer. We found the reason for the lack of people almost immediately when we discovered the entire lake was filled with viscous green algae. We weren't planning on getting into the water and there was no toxic algae warning so we progressed with the trip. We paddled South up Deschutes Canyon and onto the Deschutes river as far as we could go before turning back. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking and we spend the entire trip surrounded by several hundred foot canyon walls with all manner of rock features topography. It was truly one of the most beautiful trips we've taken. Lynda preparing to put in. The very slimy water. Lynda paddling on the Lake. Lynda heading into Deschutes Canyon. The end of the road on the Deschutes R
