4/19/2020 - Sturgeon Lake, Sauvie Island, OR
Time: 1 hour<br>
Distance: 3 miles
We put into Sturgeon Lake on another beautiful Spring day. We'd planned to spend several hours skirting the lake. We very quickly discovered that the water was extremely shallow and even at the deepest points were only around a foot deep. About 40 minutes in I we felt like the water was becoming even shallower so we headed back. I was extremely concerned we were going to become stranded. It turns out we didn't do our research here very well and put out right at the lowest tide. Many people have become stranded in the lake in circumstances just like our and had to way hours for the tide to come back in and free them. Some have even made the mistake of getting out of their kayaks and gotten stuck in over four feet of mud. Even getting out at the shore Lynda quickly sank up to her knees and had real issues getting out. Needless to say the day was a less than satisfying kayak experience.
